One more phone with integrated GPS

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Seems that future Nokia N95 will haves a GPS integrated….Okay, a little bit heavy probably, and expensive, will have Symbian (which is a bad thing in my view, especially as the UI does not really improve significantly), so wait and see . ( but Mr Nokia, feel free to send me one for evalutation purpose….)

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Just drop v0.909 of J2meMap a few minutes ago.

This features a couple of fixes, and the addition of Yahoo!Maps…

  • The Goto Lat/Lon screen was not working in some cases.
  • A bug while display Lat/Lon in the “seconds” part
  • Added Yahoo!Maps aerial and map support!

Additionnaly, I have inluced an agent called “MobileZoo“. the objective of it is to create a database about phone capacities that will be used to better manage handsets differences. More about this on a separate post!

Mobile WikiMapia mashup…

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

Playing a lot with mashup these days…After the integration with FlickrMap, the so called integration with TagZania (which was just putting the right URL somewhere), Ive played a little bit with WikiMapia.

http://j2memap.landspurg.net/pics/WikiMash1.jpg

This one was a little bit more complex, as WikiMapia use some “area” instead of just pin point. Anyway, the result is quite compelling and honestly, really fun: this encourage you to discover new places or even to realize that you are close to some well know place. It’s a perfect applicatiton on a phone for the traveller on the move….

(available since v0.908)…

Another mobile Map Mashup, “tagzania mobile”!

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Another attempt to create withou any cost a “cool mashup” with J2memap:

Import a track from internet ( Track->Import->From Internet)
Put a tagzania RSS feed URL of the form http://www.tagzania.com/rss/tag/
where is the tag you are intetersted in, like http://www.tagzania.com/rss/tag/where2.0

Then, you will suddenly see all the places tagged where2.0 on your mobile…

And this, without any change in J2memap…Cool, no?

Vodafone to compete with Google?

Friday, September 15th, 2006

at least on mobile mapping side! ;-)
Vodafone launches Mobile Earth mapping service in Germany image

Vodafone announced yesterday the availability of Mobile Earth. Basically, it’s a competitor to GoogleLocal , developped by LocationNet. 400 000 points of interests are available.

The question is how this paying effort will compete with Google Local. I guess most of the revenues from Google Local will come from advertising and sponsored results from searching.
As you know, there are still free alternatives, like J2memap! ;-)

Mobile access to Flickr geotagged pictures…

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Just playing with some cool features of the latest J2memap release. I’ve removed the old GeoBlogger option which was not working anymore, and replaced it with an access to Flickr Map…Result is quite convincing as you can see:

By clicking on a picture, you can see a bigger view of it. Be careful, this might not work on all device, due to memory limitation…
Anyway, it’s quite cool especially as you can also upload some geotagged picture to Flickr from J2memap…
