GoogleMaps on iPhone

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

One of the big things with the iPhone, is the fact that GoogleMap is preinstalled. The client seems quite good and haves a lot of fancy animations. Unfortunatly, the iPhone does not have any GPS, but it seems obvious to me that a “GoogleMap” kind of application will be part of the standard feature of the phone, like email, web browser, etc….

This kind of application will benefit also a lot of the touch screen, much more than any other application in my views. It’s so easy to point a destination, or select a push pin using your finger that it will remove numerous menus and key press!

You can see a demonstration of this feature here, on the Apple Web site

Good shot for Google and Apple….

AmazeGPS short review…

Monday, January 8th, 2007

I’ve been kindly invited to test “Amaze” from locationet.com , another “free GPS application”. First remark, is that it’s a huge program,: 521 kb for my phone (first program that I see so big!).

The main purpose of this program is to give free GPS navigation. The navigation part works quite well, but the big annoying issu is the user interface: searching location/address require a lot of typing, and it’s not very intuitive. For instance, each time I reopen the search box, I have to retype the complete city, and complete address. No way to use previous addresses unless you have entered them in the specific menu.

The other issue, is that there is absolutely no caching, and the program use a lot the network.

So it’s an interesting first step, nice as a free product but needing some finishing touch to be really useable. I am just curious what is their business deal, as they seems to have commercial deal with TeleAtlas, but no obvious revenue.

Windows Live Search for mobile first try

Friday, December 1st, 2006

So Microsoft just announced the release of “MSN Local” for mobile, and guess what: it was availaible not only for Windows Mobile phones as expected, but also for J2me phones!

So, I had a try, and here is a list of the interesting things. First, I’ve tried it on my brand new K800…The download went well, but unfortunatly, many functions did not work. In fact, the main issue is that sofkey are not recognized by the program. So I was unable to exit from the map mode, and do other things than just browsing the map….

So then I’ve tried on the WTK simulators. thins went better then.

First, the UI is not as polished as on Google Map (the big competitor)
, but haves some good idea.

For instance, when you are looking for something, let’s say an hotel, or a pizza, then you just press the first jey, eventually the second, and msn will present you the list of matching categories. Of course, this does not works for complex things, but it’s very nice for the most usual things. And it’s quite impressive for a 98 kb program.

Unfortunatly, this is done by handling directly keypress, and does not seems to work when you have a “full keyboard” like a Nokia E61.
And as you can see, they choose to display these ugly button “go” and “menu” without any extra effort! Windows mobile corporate desgin?
The change between one UI screen and the other are smooth, and very visual (the move from right to the left) and provide a good feedback.

The result of a search can be displayed on a map…Nice icons, while a little bit small…It’s quite hard to navigate within the map, as the cursor move too fast, especially if you want to zoom in…

You can zoom in/out using the left sofkey: you have then the same kind of selector than on the web:

Of course, you can have directions from here:

Here is what it looks on the map:

Traffic is also available, but for now only for various US cities:

Conclusions:

That’s a quite good first shoot for MSN, especially for a complex app like this one. And note that the application is 98kb only.
the big issue (for me) is that it does not work on my mobile, but this should be quite easily solved….
I like the good UI innovation, and let’s see how Google will react…

Real time traffic overlay

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Warning: This post will be french focused! :-)
Following the launch today of a web site providing real time traffic information ( V-Traffic ) I’ve just played a little bit with J2memap and added the ability to overlay these traffic informations.
Seens nice at a first view, but not very accurate in my own town (Bordeaux), while Paris seems to be fine.
V-Traffic offers already a mobile version, but in wap. With this version, you will have all the features of J2memap: ability to be postionned through a GPS, usage of other maps (Google/MSN, Yahoo,Ask.com) ,

logoMonV

satellite mode, etc….

Note: this is an experimental version…If you are interested contact me.

The right business model for mobile data applications!

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Three just announced yesterday that they launch a flat rate data offering. This mean unlimited data transfers. A good news for all J2memap users (and others). No need to cache megabytes of data to preserve your subscription!

GoogleMap Mobile now support GPS (on one phone?)

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

Yes, it seems that there is versin available for the “HelioDrift” that support GPS. The news cames from the Google Blog. So applications like J2memap will loose one of their key differenciator in the future. This was expected, but the real issue that GoogleMap (on mobile) is still closed, and does not provide any external API….

Microsoft answer to Google Earth

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Virtual Earth 3D has been released yesterday by Microsoft, and it looks definitively good. There are plenty of analysis and reaction on the web, so I just post a few links here:
Google Earth Blog
Microsoft Releaase Virtual Earth 3D (Beta)

The bad thing is that it’s totally linked to IE7, so you need to download it to use VirtualEarth3D….

One more phone with integrated GPS

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Seems that future Nokia N95 will haves a GPS integrated….Okay, a little bit heavy probably, and expensive, will have Symbian (which is a bad thing in my view, especially as the UI does not really improve significantly), so wait and see . ( but Mr Nokia, feel free to send me one for evalutation purpose….)

Vodafone to compete with Google?

Friday, September 15th, 2006

at least on mobile mapping side! ;-)
Vodafone launches Mobile Earth mapping service in Germany image

Vodafone announced yesterday the availability of Mobile Earth. Basically, it’s a competitor to GoogleLocal , developped by LocationNet. 400 000 points of interests are available.

The question is how this paying effort will compete with Google Local. I guess most of the revenues from Google Local will come from advertising and sponsored results from searching.
As you know, there are still free alternatives, like J2memap! ;-)
